How Dote handles your information

Dote is a relationship app made by Aptnotion — daily mood check-ins, shared milestones, streaks, and a little home-screen magic for you and your partner. This policy explains what Dote collects, how it’s used, and the choices you have. It covers the Dote iOS app and pages at dote.aptnotion.com.
01Information we collect
Account information
When you create a Dote account — with Sign in with Apple, Google Sign-In, or as a guest — we collect your name, email address, the avatar you pick, your gender, and, if you choose to add it, your birthday.
Relationship information
Once you pair with a partner, Dote stores your pairing code, your together-since and anniversary dates, any custom milestones or events you add, the daily mood entries and notes you share with each other, your streak history, and any gift hints you save for your partner to see. This is the core content of the app.
Photos
Any couple photo or widget background photo you set is saved only on your device — in the app’s local storage and a private container shared with the Dote widget. We do not upload these photos to our servers or see them.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store your device’s push token so we can deliver reminders — daily check-in nudges, activity alerts, and milestone reminders. We don’t store notification content beyond what’s needed to send it.
Subscription information
If you subscribe to Dote Plus, the purchase is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see or store your payment or card details — Apple only tells us whether your subscription is active and which plan you’re on, so we can unlock Plus features.
Usage analytics
We use Firebase Analytics (a Google service) to understand aggregate app usage — which screens get opened, sign-up completions, when a couple pairs up. Dote does not use any advertising SDK or ad-tracking framework, and this data isn’t used to build an advertising profile of you.
Calendar access — optional
If you choose to add a milestone to your device Calendar, Dote asks for Calendar access in that moment, only to create that one event. We never read your existing calendar.
02How we use it
- To run the core features you use daily — pairing, mood sharing, streaks, milestones, and widgets.
- To send the notifications you’ve turned on.
- To respond when you send us feedback or a support question.
- To understand, in aggregate, how the app is used, so we can improve it.
- To detect and prevent fraud or abuse of the service.
03How it’s shared
With your partner
Sharing what you do with your paired partner is the whole point of Dote — your daily mood, streak, milestones, gift hints, and couple photo are visible to them. That’s expected app behavior, not a data-sharing surprise.
With service providers
We use a small number of providers to run Dote, each processing data only on our behalf: Google (Firebase Analytics, Google Sign-In), Apple (Sign in with Apple, App Store subscriptions), and our server hosting provider.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers.
We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Dote or our users.
04Storage & security
Account and relationship data is stored on our servers with encryption in transit (HTTPS). We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect it, though no method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Photos stay on your device. Sign-in uses per-device tokens rather than a password you type or reuse elsewhere.
05Retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your profile, relationship data, mood history, and activity records are permanently removed from our servers — this cannot be undone.
06Your choices
- Delete your account any time from Settings → Delete Account — this immediately and permanently removes your data.
- Unpair from your partner from Settings.
- Turn off notifications any time in iOS Settings → Notifications → Dote.
- Remove a couple or widget photo any time in Settings.
- Revoke Calendar access any time in iOS Settings → Dote → Calendars.
07Children’s privacy
Dote is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
08International users
Dote’s servers may process data outside your country of residence. By using Dote, you consent to this transfer. If you’re in the EEA, UK, or a region with similar data-protection laws, you may have additional rights — access, correction, portability, or objection — over your data. Contact us to exercise them.
09Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Dote evolves. We’ll update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page, and for material changes, we’ll let you know inside the app.
